Leavenworth Rockfest 2009

I attended the 10th annual Leavenworth Rockfest last weekend with Jeremy, Adrianne, Vlad, and Christine. It was pretty different from the last two and I think much poorly attended, but I had a great time. We got a pretty late start and didn't get out to Leavenworth until Saturday afternoon. We headed up to Alphabet Rock -- we thought a roadside crag would be a good option so we could be sure to get to the festivities in time. Unfortunately, Dogleg Crack was taken the whole time so I didn't lead anything. But both Vlad and Christine took a turn on lead on Meat Grinder (and that crux still feels hard to me on TR) and Chris set up the 10a sport climb on TR as well. Before we knew it it was close to 5 pm, so we headed to Bridge Creek to set up camp, get some free food, and join in the festivities. I loved Sonnie Trotter's presentation (I always like seeing him) and was pleasantly surprised by Will Stanhope's talk as well.

Sunday, we were joined by Andy (he was looking for partners in the camp ground) made the long hike up to Pearly Gates where we were shortly joined by Adam and Carla (friends we made back at Vantage a while ago) and we kind of took over the crag. I put up No Room For Squares (5.8), gave Jeremy a little crack tutorial, and TRd some hard stuff that Andy, Chris, and Vlad were putting up. I wish that hike wasn't so long, but the crag is a lot of fun!! Vlad was running around with his camera the whole time so I may have some pictures to post at some point if he decides to share them.

And in other news, I came back to discover this story. WTF? Obama was pretty public about wanting to do away with DOMA and DADT when he was campaigning. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have voted for him if he had openly supported either one. And now white house officials are saying they wouldn't object to homosexuals being kicked out of the military and Obama is asking the supreme court not to take cases challenging DADT? Seriously, WTF?! That's not the guy I voted for. I really liked his speech in Egypt last week and I think he's been a great president in so many ways so far. And I feel like I've given him the benefit of the doubt as far as gay rights up until now. I was okay with him not doing anything and just letting this stuff work itself out ... because I think it is working itself out for the most part. But it seems now that he's actually changing his tune ... and if he doesn't change it back to the one he was singing while campaigning very soon, I may have to find another candidate to vote for in 2012!! Grrrrr

Julia - my Dad is about to hike the Appalachian Trail with a friend, and I want to get him some good hiking socks. Do you have any recommendations? TIA!

For women, I think Fox River are the best socks ever!! But for a guy, I'd stick with the tried and true Smart Wool. They're the standard anything outdoor socks. I wouldn't recommend the really thick socks though, I think the causal hiker would probably be the best sock for a trip like that.

The AT is a pretty long trek -- is he doing a thru-hike? He'll need lots of socks for that! ;)
